- How much electricity does an average UK home use?
- Around 3,550 kWh a year, or 9.7 kWh a day. That is the mean across 1.79 million household profiles derived from smart meter data, and it agrees to within 1% with SERL’s independently published mean of 9.8 kWh a day from roughly 13,000 real metered homes. Ofgem’s typical domestic consumption value of 2,500 kWh is lower because it sits closer to a median: a mean is pulled up by homes that heat with electricity and by heavy users.

- Usually because you are comparing against the wrong number. Ofgem’s typical domestic consumption value is close to a median household, and it was revised down in July 2026. The metered mean runs about 40% higher. If you are between the two you are entirely ordinary, and half of Britain is above the median by definition.
- How much does a heat pump add to an electricity bill?
- Households with a heat pump use around 15.5 kWh a day more than households without one — but only about a third of that difference is space heating. The gap is still 9 kWh a day in July, when nothing is being heated, which shows heat pump households differ from other households in ways that have nothing to do with the heat pump. The seasonal part of the difference, which is the defensible estimate of space heating, is roughly 1,950 kWh a year.

- The households with an EV in this data use around 13.1 kWh a day more than those without, which is about 4,800 kWh a year and implies roughly 15,000 miles of home charging. Scale it to your own driving at about 3.2 miles per kWh measured at the meter — charging losses mean the meter sees more than the battery receives.
- Does a better EPC rating mean lower electricity use?
- Not in this data, which is worth knowing before paying for the claim. Homes rated A to C average 9.70 kWh a day and homes rated D to E average 9.70 as well — a difference under 0.1%. For non-heating electricity that is plausible, since EPC measures fabric and heating rather than appliances. For heat pump households it is not plausible, and we treat it as a limitation of the synthetic data rather than a finding.
