How we make money

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Right now, we don’t. The site costs money to run and the person who built it pays for it.

You should still know how a site like this intends to pay for itself, because that decides whether you can trust what it tells you. Most energy calculators are free because someone pays them when you get a quote, switch supplier or hand over your phone number. That money depends on what the calculator says. Ours won’t.

What we will never do

How we plan to pay for it

By charging organisations, not households. Councils, housing associations, community energy groups and advice services may want versions of these tools tailored to their area, or help using the data. That work is paid; the tools you use here stay free. More on the organisations page.

We may also do paid analysis of the open dataset. The data itself stays free to download.

The rule underneath all of it: money can come from people who use the tools, but it can never depend on what an answer says.

If this changes

We’ll say so here, with the date and what changed, rather than editing it quietly. If you ever see something on the site that contradicts this page, please tell us at hello@energycosting.co.uk.
