Common questions

Am I eligible for the £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme grant?
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme covers England and Wales and is not means-tested, so income and benefits make no difference. You need to own the property or be the landlord, be replacing a fossil-fuel system with a heat pump that meets the whole property’s heating and hot water needs, and not be in social housing. The grant is £7,500 for an air-to-water or ground source heat pump, rising to £9,000 if the property is off the gas grid and replacing oil or LPG. Scotland and Northern Ireland are not covered and have separate schemes.
What replaces ECO4 when it ends?
Nothing directly. ECO4 closes on 31 December 2026 and the November 2025 Budget confirmed there will be no successor supplier obligation. The government is instead directing grant funding through the Warm Homes Plan, and has said it will consolidate support for low-income households into a single scheme — but as of September 2026 that scheme has no published name, eligibility criteria or opening date. In the meantime, the Warm Homes: Local Grant runs through participating councils in England.
Can I get a heat pump grant in Scotland?
Yes, but not through the Boiler Upgrade Scheme, which is England and Wales only. Home Energy Scotland offers a £7,500 grant plus a £7,500 interest-free loan for a heat pump, with an extra £1,500 for rural and island addresses. It is not means-tested, but it is limited to owner-occupiers living in the property as their principal residence, and funding is first-come first-served within the financial year.
What heat pump support is available in Northern Ireland?
Northern Ireland is outside both the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and ECO4. The Affordable Warmth Scheme has a hard income test of under £23,000 but does not fund heat pumps. Fully funded air source heat pumps are available through NISEP, the levy-funded programme delivered by nine scheme managers you apply to directly. NISEP is rationed and operates waiting lists, so qualifying on paper does not guarantee an award.
Do grant checkers need my personal details?

Eligibility for these schemes depends on your nation, tenure, property rating, income band and whether you receive certain benefits — none of which requires a name, email address or phone number. Checkers that ask for contact details generally do so because the completed enquiry is the product being sold to installers.
