MPAN and MPRN: your meter numbers explained

Published 23 October 2026.

Every home has a reference number for each energy supply. The MPAN (meter point administration number) is for electricity; the MPRN (meter point reference number) is for gas. They identify the connection, not the meter or the supplier, so they stay the same when you switch or get a new meter. You’ll be asked for them when switching, when moving home, and when sorting out a mix-up between meters.

The MPAN

On an electricity bill the full MPAN is printed in a box of two rows beginning with a large S. It has 21 digits:

Your MPAN’s top row is a quick check of your meter type: if it starts 02 you are on a multi-rate meter, and your bill should show two or more unit rates.

Your region is in your MPAN

The first two digits of the MPAN core identify your electricity distribution region, the same regions the price cap is set for. So your bill tells you exactly which region’s rates apply to you:

This is more reliable than going by council or county, because region boundaries follow the old electricity board areas and a few councils are split. The postcode finder on energy prices by region gets you most of the way; the MPAN settles it.

The MPRN

The gas MPRN is shorter, up to 10 digits, with no letters and no top row. It’s on your gas bill and in your supplier’s app, and is often printed on or near the meter. If the number on the meter and the one on the bill differ, go by the bill.

Do I need them to use my smart meter data?

Not here. Our electricity and gas analysers read the download from your supplier’s app or account, and the file never leaves your device. Some exports include the MPAN or MPRN; like everything else in the file, it stays on your device.

Common questions

Where do I find my MPAN?

On your electricity bill, usually in a box of numbers starting with a large S, often labelled supply number or MPAN. The bottom row of that box, 13 digits, is the MPAN core, which is the part you’ll normally be asked for. It is also in your supplier’s app or online account.

Where do I find my MPRN?

On your gas bill, labelled MPRN, meter point reference number or gas supply number. It is a number of up to 10 digits with no letters. It is often on the gas meter too, but use the one on your bill if they differ.

How do I find my MPAN or MPRN without a bill?

Your supplier can tell you, and it is in their app. For gas, the Find My Supplier service at findmysupplier.energy looks up the MPRN and supplier by address. For electricity, your regional network operator can give you the MPAN for an address.

Is my MPAN the same as my meter serial number?

No. The MPAN identifies the supply point, your connection, and stays the same if your meter is replaced or you change supplier. The meter serial number identifies the meter itself and changes with it.
